& Mahanaim Orphanage

Before the inception of Brie's Unicorn Cafe and Pocket Pet Playground, the Mahanaim Village Foundation and Orphanage was grappling with significant challenges. Established by Paulus 35 years ago, the foundation, despite its noble mission, struggled financially, severely impacting Paulus's health and the orphanage's success. Six years ago, Renee and Patrick encountered the foundation and were moved by its critical work in supporting Bali's most vulnerable children, including impoverished families and troubled teens. They quickly became instrumental in revitalizing the foundation, easing the financial burden and enabling the orphanage's first expansion in a decade. This pivotal moment deepened their resolve to contribute meaningfully to the children's futures, leading to the creation of Brie’s Unicorn Cafe as a vibrant extension of the foundation's mission.

Recognizing the problem with the gap between the orphans' potential and the opportunities available to them, Patrick and Renee saw an opportunity to extend the foundation's impact through Brie's Unicorn Cafe and Pocket Pet Playground. The cafe wasn't just a business venture; it was a way to open the door for orphans who, despite their capabilities, were often sidelined by societal biases and a lack of practical skills.

In Bali's vibrant but competitive landscape, the orphans found themselves at a distinct disadvantage. The stigma of being an orphan, coupled with a lack of formal education and vocational skills, meant that many were denied the chance to work, to contribute, and to fulfill their aspirations. This societal shunning not only diminished their confidence but also limited their ability to achieve independence and success.

Brie's Unicorn Cafe emerged as a sanctuary where these challenges were met with innovative solutions. Beyond its enchanting decor and playful theme, the cafe offers real-world learning opportunities in a society that often overlooks these young individuals' potential. Here, within the colorful walls adorned with unicorns and sparkles coupled with the delighted squeals of children interacting with pocket pets, the orphans of Mahanaim Village are given roles that teach them essential life and work skills. These skills range from customer service and English language proficiency to operations management and teamwork.

These roles are more than jobs; they are stepping stones towards self-assurance and a brighter future. Each task undertaken in the cafe serves to build the orphans' confidence and equips them with the tools needed to navigate and succeed in the outside world. Patrick and Renee's vision for the cafe thus became a crucial counterpoint to the societal barriers these orphans face, offering a path to empowerment that was previously out of reach.

In this vibrant, nurturing environment, the orphans found not just employment, but a platform to demonstrate their worth, challenge misconceptions, and carve out a place for themselves in society.
